Chibi, from the Japanese word for something small, is defined by a ratio rather than by a color palette or a line style. A realistic figure is drawn seven to eight heads tall; a chibi is two to four, and Japanese studios name the standard sizes directly, nitoshin for a two-head figure and santoshin for a three-head one. Everything else follows from that ratio. The eyes grow to fill a head that has been enlarged, the nose disappears because there is no space for a nose between eyes that large, hands become mittens because individual fingers stop being legible, and the neck usually vanishes.
