Consistency is where these tools differ most. A single portrait is easy; getting the same jawline, the same jacket seams and the same hair part in a second image is the actual job, and it is the reason the rest of this guide is built around reference images rather than prompt tricks.

How to make an AI character step by step

The order matters. Lock the identity in a neutral portrait first, then spend credits on variations. Every step below runs inside the same workbench, so the portrait from step two is the reference for steps three to five.

    Write a one-line sheet

    Name, age range, four or five fixed traits, a palette, a medium. Example: 'Ines Kato, late twenties, cropped silver bob, hooked nose, freckles, oversized rust corduroy jacket, teal and rust palette, painterly game concept art.' This line is pasted into every prompt afterwards, unchanged.

    Render the base portrait

    Open Seedream 5.0 in text mode, choose 1:1, and ask for a three-quarter view on a plain grey background with even light.     Build the turnaround from references

    Switch the model to GPT Image 2, upload the portrait as a reference image, and prompt for 'the same character, front view, side view and back view, full body, same outfit, white background'. Reference-based generation is what keeps the freckles and the jacket cut in place; a text-only rerun would redesign both.

    Change the pose

    Upload the full-body frame to the AI pose generator and describe the stance in plain words, such as 'sitting on a crate, elbows on knees, looking left'. The tool rebuilds the body and leaves the face, hair and outfit alone, which is exactly the split you want.

Every step above showed 13 credits per run on 2026-09-05 when done in GPT Image 2 at 1K or in the pose, clothes and template tools, so the Free plan's monthly 40 buys three of them. How to keep an AI character consistent across images

There are three levers: reference images, seed reuse and prompt anchors. Reference images do most of the work. OpenAI's own image guide lists visual consistency for recurring characters as a known limitation of prompt-only generation, per the OpenAI image generation guide (2026), which is why the edit path with input images exists. Does seed reuse help?

Only a little, and only with the same model. A fixed seed with a near-identical prompt tends to return a near-identical composition, which is useful for A/B testing a single word change. It does not hold identity once you move the camera or the pose, and it means nothing across models. Treat the seed as a bookmark, not as a character lock.

What are prompt anchors?

  • Two or three physical traits that a model can actually render: 'hooked nose', 'gap teeth', 'silver bob' beat 'striking features'.
  • One garment described by cut and material, not brand: 'oversized rust corduroy jacket, sleeves pushed up'.
  • A named palette of two colours; models keep colour far better than they keep shape.
  • The same medium phrase in every prompt, such as 'painterly game concept art', because a style switch changes the face too.
  • The same framing word: 'three-quarter view' or 'full body'. Framing changes are the commonest hidden cause of drift.

What prompts work for an AI character description generator?

Whether the description comes from a chat model, a Perchance page or your own notes, the sheet needs the same shape before it goes into an image model: identity first, presentation last. Style words are the second half of the sheet, and the anime tools are a good source for them. NovelAI's generator, for example, is built around tag-style prompts with separate prompts per character in a group scene, as shown on the NovelAI site (2026), and PixAI leans on community-trained models and LoRAs for a specific look, per PixAI (2026). If you want that kind of tag vocabulary, borrow the nouns, not the artist names.

  • Leave out quality adjectives ('stunning', 'masterpiece'); they add nothing a model can act on.
  • Leave out contradictory style stacks ('minimalist, highly ornate').
  • Add exclusions only for a recurring fault: 'no extra jewellery', 'no text', 'feet in frame'.
  • Keep the description under about a hundred words; longer sheets bury the anchors.

One legal note before the character becomes a product. Why do AI characters drift and how do you fix it?
