- An open field or a rooftop at golden hour gives warm backlight and long shadows. A brick alley or a covered walkway gives even shade you can shoot at noon. Bleachers and a field under stadium lights give hard directional light and only work after dark.
- Props that mean something, or none
- An instrument, a jersey, a letterman jacket, a stack of books for a subject you actually love. One prop used properly is worth more than five arranged around you, and anything with readable text is the first thing to look dated in five years.
- What the preview settles
- Whether the cream sweater or the black dress carries the field better, whether the golden-hour idea survives an overcast day, whether the campus location is worth the drive. It settles the argument before the session, which is the only time changing your mind is free.

Most senior sessions are a version of one of these three, and each one wants different clothes and a different hour of the day.
Golden hour outdoors
A field, a hillside or a quiet road in the last hour of light. Warm backlight, soft skin tones and a wide open background make this the default senior look for a reason.
Campus, sport or the thing you did for four years
The activity that took up high school: an instrument, a uniform, a workshop, a stage. This is the frame families keep, because it dates the photograph to a person rather than to a season.
Clean background, close to the yearbook look
A simple head and shoulders frame against a plain wall or a studio backdrop. Useful for applications and for family prints, and the closest of the three to what a school actually asks for.

When should senior pictures be taken?+
Usually the summer before senior year, roughly eight to fourteen months before graduation. No. Yearbook photographs, school records and applications all need a real photograph of you, and many schools require the headshot to come from a contracted photographer under specific rules about background, framing and props. How is this different from prom or graduation photos?+
The occasion changes, the method does not. Prom sessions are shot in formalwear in the hour before the event, and graduation photos put a cap and gown over whatever you are wearing underneath, but both use the same decisions about light, location and color that this page sets out. Cap and gown shots in particular are worth previewing, because the gown color dictates the background.
What does the AI preview get wrong?+
Three things, consistently. Hands holding an object come out unreliable, so previews of a prop-heavy pose are worth generating a few times. Any readable text on clothing, a jacket letter or a jersey number, renders as nonsense on most models. And likeness drifts, so the person in the preview looks like you rather than being you. Change one variable at a time and check the face on each run. For a straightforward change of background on a real photo, the background changer is more accurate than regenerating the whole frame.
