Dress against the background, not with it. Cream, deep teal, slate blue, forest green and charcoal all sit clearly in front of orange foliage, while burgundy, rust and pumpkin sink into it and flatten the group. Pick two or three of those colors and spread them across the family rather than putting everyone in the same one, then add a single warm accent: a mustard scarf, a rust jacket on the youngest child. Avoid tight stripes and small checks, which alias into moiré on a camera sensor, and avoid pure white, which clips before skin does in backlight. In this template the wardrobe is supplied in that palette automatically, so what everyone happened to be wearing in their uploads does not carry through.

The last hour before sunset, during the ten-to-fourteen-day peak color window in your area. That hour matters more than the location: low sun coming through the trees from behind puts a bright edge on hair and shoulders and turns the canopy into a lit screen rather than a dark ceiling. Overcast days work too and are easier with small children, because nobody squints, but the images come back cooler and need warming afterwards.

Two or three come back with reliable likeness; four is usually fine; beyond that faces begin to drift, and the smallest face in the frame goes first. This is a real limit rather than a setting, and it comes from how much of the output's pixel budget each face gets. If your group is large, the practical workaround is to render the adults and the children as two frames and place them side by side, or to choose a tighter ratio so everyone is closer to the camera.

Paths and bridges work because they give the group a natural line to stand along and put distance between them and the trees, which is what lets the background blur. Solid walls of foliage directly behind a family are the common mistake: with nothing to separate them, everyone reads as flat.
